Assistants

An assistant shapes how nara behaves in a conversation. Every conversation runs with exactly one assistant. Your organization always has the assistant nara, marked Default, which nara uses when nothing else is bound.

Open Assistants under Automation in the admin console (/admin/assistants). Each row shows where the assistant is reachable and whether its capabilities are restricted. New assistant and a click on an assistant open it in Studio.

Setting Effect
Tone Text appended to nara’s instructions in conversations with this assistant.
Capabilities Skills that are always active.
Limited to The Tool groups and Tools the conversation may use. Without a limit, all Tools are allowed.
Starts with A Workflow that starts with every new conversation.
Quality tier The model quality tier. Default keeps the organization’s model setting.

A conversation keeps the assistant revision it started with, so publishing a change affects new conversations only.

Studio lists the channels of an assistant under Reachable via. Organization admins add and remove Teams chats, Teams Phone numbers, and phone numbers there.

  • Chat — conversations in the user workspace use the default assistant. Admins start a chat with another assistant with Start a chat with this assistant.
  • Microsoft Teams — the Teams integration binds one assistant for Teams chats and Teams calls. See Integrations.
  • Phone numbers — each number answers with its own assistant. See Phone numbers.
  • API principals — an API principal runs with the assistant bound to it.

An assistant that is bound somewhere cannot be deleted. Remove the binding first.

Open Phone numbers under Infrastructure (/admin/phone-numbers). Choose an assistant in the Assistant column for each number. A number without an assistant refuses calls.

Callers on a phone number have no user account. They can use exactly the Tools that the number’s assistant allows by name or group; an assistant without allowed Tools gives phone callers no Tools.

A Tool that needs approval runs only after a verified caller approves it by voice. A caller is verified after entering the number’s access code during the call (Call settings → Require access code); caller ID alone never verifies a caller. Without a verified caller, such a Tool cannot run on the call.

Numbers that answered with nara before the update keep answering with nara. Numbers that answered with a retired configurable Agent show Assign an assistant to answer calls and refuse calls until you assign an assistant. See Retired Agents.

Who may use an assistant is set on Access Control under Assistants.
